About Stonycroft Lavender

Location - Stonycroft Lavender Farm was established in North Loburn in 2005. We researched a number of sites before locating an ideal site for growing lavender in the Rangiora area. The site is well suited to growing lavender due to the makeup of the soil, good drainage, sunlight hours and sheltered location.

The Lavender - All our lavender plants are varieties of Lavandula Angustifolia 'True Lavender' , recognised as being more difficult to grow, and producing smaller quantities of oil than 'Lavandins', (which are a hybrid lavender plant). However the oil that is produced from Angustifolia type plants is much sweeter and is recognised as being of higher quality.

We currently have 400 plants in the ground, and will be planting a further 1,000 plants this autumn. All work on the lavender is done by hand - from the planting, pruning and harvesting to the bottling and packaging of the end product.

Spray-free - no sprays or chemicals are applied to our lavender at any time. You can be sure that the lavender oil you receive is 100% pure and natural.

The production of oil - Lavender plants flower in the summer, and it is at this time that the fields look most attractive and the bees are out in force. You can smell the aroma of the lavender in the morning air.

To achieve the best quality oil, the flowers must be cut at just the right time. Then it is essential that the cut flower heads are kept cool until they are distilled, which is done within hours of being cut.

The production of oil

Once harvesting of the flowers is complete, we transport them to a local distillery. The flower heads are then pressed into a still, after which steam is forced up through the flowers, extracting the oil from them. This steam then condenses outside the still and is collected, and the lavender oil is then seperated from this condensate.

Finally water is removed from the oil, as this will adversely affect the aromatic and medicinal qualities of the oil over time. Once this has been completed the oil is allowed to mature in the bottle for around 12 months, then packaged and delivered in top condition - to you.

We concentrate solely on high quality oil production, and do not compromise this principle - it is our total focus. You can be sure that the lavender oil you purchase from us will be the very best we are able to produce.

Best of all - we are in the lavender oil business because it is our hobby and our passion. We both love working with lavender plants, and enjoy the challenge of trying to improve on previous results with every harvest.
