Location - Stonycroft Lavender Farm was established in North Loburn in 2005. We researched a number of sites before locating an ideal site for growing lavender in the Rangiora area. The site is well suited to growing lavender due to the makeup of the soil, good drainage, sunlight hours and sheltered location.
The Lavender - All our lavender plants are varieties of Lavandula Angustifolia 'True Lavender' , recognised as being more difficult to grow, and producing smaller quantities of oil than 'Lavandins', (which are a hybrid lavender plant). However the oil that is produced from Angustifolia type plants is much sweeter and is recognised as being of higher quality.
We currently have 400 plants in the ground, and will be planting a further 1,000 plants this autumn. All work on the lavender is done by hand - from the planting, pruning and harvesting to the bottling and packaging of the end product.
Spray-free - no sprays or chemicals are applied to our lavender at any time. You can be sure that the lavender oil you receive is 100% pure and natural.
The production of oil - Lavender plants flower in the summer, and it is at this time that the fields look most attractive and the bees are out in force. You can smell the aroma of the lavender in the morning air.
To achieve the best quality oil, the flowers must be cut at just the right time. Then it is essential that the cut flower heads are kept cool until they are distilled, which is done within hours of being cut.
